I want to have a discussion of a recent hot topic- civil asset forfeiture. For those of you who don't know, it's basically that the police get to keep whatever they collect during a bust. The burden of proof should not be on the property owner to prove innocence. Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be the motto, right? This creates a perverse profit motive for police while in some cases straight up stealing from innocent people. Of course police forces across the country are PISSED about reforms. New Mexico very recently has made drastic reforms, and is the only state that currently has its head on straight about this issue. The end of this article has a break down- state by state. reason.com/blog/2015/06/09/this-map-details-whether-asset-forfeiturWhat do you think about civil asset forfeiture?

So it seems like civil asset forfeiture is a "tax" at a higher rate. The only difference I see is the collection agency. Instead of the IRS, we have the police collecting. Both constitute theft.
